Few motorcycles have a story quite like Royal Enfield. Its history spans more than a century, connecting British engineering heritage with the colour, culture and extraordinary landscapes of India.
From Britain to the world
The Royal Enfield story began in Redditch, Worcestershire, England. In 1901, the company produced its first motorcycle, beginning a journey that would establish the name among the most enduring in motorcycling.
The brand became associated with the phrase “Made Like a Gun”, reflecting its historic engineering roots and its reputation for building robust machines.
The beginning of a great Indian story
In 1955, Royal Enfield partnered with Madras Motors to establish motorcycle production in Madras, now Chennai. The Bullet became increasingly popular in India, where its sturdy construction and distinctive character suited the country’s varied roads and riding conditions.
When the original British factory closed in 1970, production in India continued. India became the centre of the brand’s continuing story, preserving its heritage while introducing Royal Enfield to generations of new riders.
The Classic 500 — A modern classic with an old soul

The Royal Enfield Classic 500 brought together traditional styling and a more modern riding experience. Inspired by post-war motorcycles, it featured a rounded fuel tank, timeless lines, an upright riding position and a distinctive exhaust note.
Its 499cc, single-cylinder engine delivered the relaxed, torque-led character that many riders associate with classic motorcycling. Rather than being designed purely for speed, the Classic 500 celebrates the pleasure of riding and the connection between rider, machine and road.
Production of the 500cc model ended in 2020, making it a distinctive chapter in Royal Enfield’s history.
Why we ride the Royal Enfield Classic 500
At Throttle India, we believe the motorcycle should be part of the adventure, not simply a way to cover the distance.
The Classic 500 encourages a more considered style of riding: enjoying the changing scenery, experiencing the rhythm of mountain roads and stopping to discover the places that make every journey memorable.
For riders joining us from the UK and Europe, there is something particularly special about riding a motorcycle with British roots in the country where its modern story truly flourished.
On the high mountain roads of Ladakh or through the remote valleys of Spiti, the journey becomes about far more than the motorcycle. It is about the people you meet, the landscapes you discover and the memories you bring home.
More than a motorcycle. A journey through history.
When you join a Throttle India tour, you are experiencing a part of India’s living motorcycling culture while exploring some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world.
From the high passes of Ladakh to the remote villages of Spiti, the Royal Enfield Classic 500 brings its own unmistakable character to the adventure.
